I hope the Olympic committees bias to reject Chicago doesn't result in less than the best games. I don't know if it's an overreaction by athletes to not attend the games because of the virus, or other concerns. Rio isn't the safest city either. Although Brazil doesn't seem to be a target of terrorists, as America is.
It's gotten to the point where countries and cities are not even interested in hosting the games because of the expense. That's unfortunate, but reality. I believe Boston decided not to bid for the games because of the expense.
I'm sure Chicago could profitably use whatever facilities needed to be built for the games, after the games were over. I'm not sure the same can be said for Rio. Maybe member nations could help the host nation financially.
I hope Obama's library will be a boom to that part of Chicago. Good luck. It seems that you feel that having Mitsubishi in Normal for 30 years was somehow not worth it since they are now leaving. I disagree. Mitsubishi is not alone in this kind of activity. Domestic automakers (and other manufacturers) have opened and closed large factories across the US in the past 30-40-50 years. During the 30 years Mitsubishi was here, people were employed, mortgages were paid off, kids were sent to college. But the only constant is change. Businesses exist to make products to make money. They do not exist to employ people. Nothing lasts forever and its foolish to expect businesses to provide jobs for life for everyone they ever employ. Competition to attract business is a reality (though I do agree it should involve pitching infrastructure investment and quality of life issues - not just tax breaks alone to the business). So yes, Mitsubishi leaving is sad but not evil. Hopefully another entrepreneur with a good idea will find the location and workforce appealing for their business model for another 10-15-20 years?Bluegrass Boynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-586914322065730371.post-51729542720200848532015-07-25T06:32:54.291-05:002015-07-25T06:32:54.291-05:00the only solution is to pay up as the great Jim Ed...the only solution is to pay up as the great Jim Edgar saidAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-586914322065730371.post-24964590083815866072015-07-13T19:08:13.362-05:002015-07-13T19:08:13.362-05:00Aurelia Pucinski changed parties like some people ...Aurelia Pucinski changed parties like some people change their socks.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-586914322065730371.post-51200725194351315112015-07-09T14:00:22.325-05:002015-07-09T14:00:22.325-05:00I wonder if the answer to the supreme court ruling...I wonder if the answer to the supreme court ruling is legislation that differentiates between urban, suburban and rural gun ownership. Hunting deer in downtown Chicago is different from hunting deer out near the Missouri river. Perhaps we need to fund a strategy that ties up gun ownership in the courts for the next decade or two, endless frivolous suits. All it takes is finding a few courageous judges to issue restraining orders preventing the sale of guns until the legal issues are settled. Of course, the real problem here is the ruling itself, establishing an individual right to gun ownership. How anyone can read the second amendment and extract that nonsense from it, I don't know. Over the last ten years many people have been involved in building up the capacity of the state to create permanent supportive housing for the chronically homeless. the state has multiplied their funding many times to provide dollars for case management. They have done this because supportive housing is a proven remedy for the extreme costs of chronic homelessness. How extreme are these costs? Most people are unaware that allowing people to live on the street costs them money. In fact, the nationwide average cost for keeping a significant percentage of these people on the street is $50,000 per annum. Think of that: doing nothing costs $50,000 a year per person. Why? Because chronically homeless people are chronic users of public services. They are in the emergency room more than others, they are hauled before the court more often than others, they spend nights in jail more often than others, they die younger than others. We are all bearing this cost. The state learned this ten years ago and started pushing for more supportive housing. Supportive housing cuts those expenditures at least in half and often by two-thirds. It also pulls in federal dollars which have been established just for this purpose. The only thing that the state needs to do is pay for the case management. Now in comes the new governor, and what does he cut? Dollars for case managing supportive housing. Millions of dollars of cuts. This has all be explained to him over and over, but great businessman that he is, he would rather pay more to create a new crisis on the street, than continue with a proven strategy that is saving everyone money--not to mention saving lives and improving the quality of life for all of us who live with and around these poor benighted souls who have no place to call home. It seems that becoming "business friendly" requires that we destroy the quality of life of our community. Long streets void of automobiles prohibit parking unless your car has a sticker for the Zone. The small (1/2 block) streets leading to the alleys are ruled by parking meters as are the main streets. I do not understand zoned parking. If residents feel other taxpayers are taking "their" spots why not have two hour limits on residential street parking unless one has the Zone sticker. This informant wears a wire and urges illegal criminal activities that he claims will be beneficial to the organization and he swears that they will not be committed by anyone connected to the organization (In this case, Matt Hale himself). After two plus years of this informant asking Matt Hale permission to perform these illegal acts over and over again,Rev. Hale finally disingenuously said "whatever you wanna do" and that was all the proof that the government needed. According to Matt Hale and several of his organization's top associates however, the informant was already believed to be an agent provocateur. The way the courts are demanding it though, you must say "NO" and walk away each and every time. The DOJ did not want to let this opportunity pass them by and arrested Rev. Hale weeks after the supposed crime while the actual criminal, Tony Evola, cashed his government check.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-586914322065730371.post-25561335180464542492014-07-23T01:22:30.265-05:002014-07-23T01:22:30.265-05:00FREE PAUL MODROWSKI!!
