The Mayor treats us, the police, as a necessary evil. Our contract has been over for 21 months. Daley says we are selfish now that the economy is in a slump. Was it in a slump 21 months ago? No. Our mayor drags contract negotiations every time the contract expires. He will vote himself a 6 percent raise every year for himself and the alderman, but call the police selfish. He gave the laborers a prevailing wage raise contract in the past few years that lasts almost to 2016. But we are selfish. His wage package for the new contract was a 1 percent raise for the first year. Does this even touch the cost of living. He pulls our Superintendents strings like a puppet and the superintendent dances the dance. Weis states he is for us but shows his true colors every day. He states he is here to improve the departments resources and equipment but does nothing. He will not even fight the fact we are at least 2500 officers short. He is just a puppet in it for the money. You state we are selfish. We didn't start the fight, but we aren't going to back down. Look at the turnout for the march. Never before have the police come toghether in such a great number. It even surprised us. It shows you we are tired of being treated like a necessary evil. We put our lives on the line every day for the citizens of Chicago. Not because it's our job, it is what we believe in. This is not a job but something you have to believe in. We lost 3 officers in a very short period of time. One, Officer Francis because the mayor will not hire and he was working alone. If he had a partner, he would probably be alive today. He payed the ultimate price as well as the other 2 officers did. Are we selfish? No. We just want a contract that is worth the job we do. Investigate your facts and look at both sides before you spew your liberal garbage.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-586914322065730371.post-660041208583450022009-03-30T09:59:00.000-05:002009-03-30T09:59:00.000-05:00I usually wouldn't even waste my fingers respondin...I usually wouldn't even waste my fingers responding to some police hating liberal like you, but after reading your blog, I couldn't resist.

First, we are not picketing the IOC. We are informational picketing City Hall to get our side of the story out. GO KNOWS, no liberal media in Chicago would ever actually research and print an unbiased article. Instead, you just like to voice your own selfish opinions to "stir the pot".

I'm sure it kills you to know that we have the same protections afforded us under the same First Amendment protections that you "so called" journalists wrap yourself with whenever it fits YOUR needs.

As for our contract situation, we did't step away from the bargaining table, the city did! All we are seeking is a raise and contract commensurate with what the mayor has already given to himself, the alderman, the teachers, the trade unions, etc.. All those raises were given when we were in the mayors' so-called bad economy. I don't see any of them giving their raises back.

Why don't you actually use your journalistic skills and investigate the BILLIONS the city has stockpiled through public property sell-offs, TIFs, roughly 5000 less officer salaries due to not hiring any replacements, etc..
Oh, i know why, that would actually take some work by you instead of getting up in your jammies and writing a quick blog condemning the "greedy police". That's much easier. Hope you didn't spill your coffee on your keyboard.

So before you go bashing the police and calling us unfair and greedy, please try and actually do what a true journalist is supposed to do. Investigate and REPORT THE FACTS!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
